I'm not talking about work. I wonder why so many people cannot think for themseves. They are so afraid to stand out in the crowd for fear of being an outcast. I see kids coming out of college with bachelor and masters degrees but so limited in their thinking. What is everyone so afraid of? Being smart? Looking dumb? What do you think?

Amendment about college grads: When I was in school all the professors encouraged free thinking, standing out, and speaking up for what you believe in. I don't feel most of the kids today have professors like that.

Group think happens when fear sets in as it did when the twin towers were destroyed. People were afraid to be unpatriotic or unamerican to the extent that Policy and going to war with Iraq was not questioned.

Groupthink is very bad it stifles innovation, discovery and finding good answers.

I agree. There is not enough emphasis on thought and rationality in our society. I think we feel a lot of pressure to conform to the majority opinion. Of course it's sometimes good to have "group think" but I think when you don't question what you or a group of people believe, you can run into some trouble. Even if you whole-heartily believe something, you should still be challenging yourself on WHY you believe it.

I think everyone is just afraid of being in the minority opinion.

There's an awesome quote by Albert Einstein on this subject, "The value of college education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think."

They're afraid of failure and rejection. they don't know if the road they're taking will lead to a grassy meadow or a straight down drop off a cliff, so it's easier to take a safe bet and take the path that has been used time and time again. And it's not that they have limited thinking, it's that they have a full range of thinking, but do not express opinions because they are afraid they are wrong. If this really concerns you, be a therapist or a life coach or something and be a trailblazer helping to make trailblazers! And, answer my question on the Zeitgeist; it's underneath your question, be a trailblazer.

I so agree with you. Nowadays, people are afraid to speak up for the fear of being rejected. Society base their judgements from the education that you have attained. Not knowing that the real world is nothing compared to what you learned from school. You should believe in yourself no matter what other people thinks of you. Be yourself, don't take anyone's s**t, and never let them take you alive.

I'm more of an individualist. But there is something to be said of consensus. Just as long as one's ideas and oppinions do not impinge or hurt the efforts of freedoms of others. Freedom and love are the main things. After survival and reproduction, there are the BEST!

Not so much 'group think' as it is a 'group hug'. Masses tend to lose themselves. A fact of being human and a herd mentallity. We start out life on our own, we end the same way. In between, we judge ourselves as we perceive how others judge us. We are just herding ourselves through a journey that allows us to be so much more.

People force themselves to conform to their society. Although they complain, they don't act, or they will be end up being outcast or being crazy by their society. They prefer to follow their sheeple attitude rather than act, because it is easier to conform to their society rather than challenge.

"Limited" is a judgment that I do not agree with. It's fairly easy to pass judgment on what others think and how they think.

It's always a disappointing or frustrating situation when people won't do as we want them to and I wasn't clear from your question what your expectations are for graduates.

But wouldn't it be limited thinking not to understand human nature, how and why people do as they do?

Sometimes it's a good thing to have
many minds bring something to the
table.
Other times, it only bogs down progress.
