Start pressing the moment you see data come onto your screen with F8. And continue to press, until you get into the screen where you can go to safe mode, etc. etc.

F5 and F8 were the two keys you could use.. F5 bypassed the start up files, and the F8 key gave you several options, as in Safe Mode, Normal Mode, and a few others, too numerous for an old geezer to remember. what seems to be the problem with it?

they didn't switch to the function keys until Windows 2000. If I remember correctly you simply hold the control key down, while your computer is booting up. This opens to a setup screen. Have a great weekend!
