Depends entirely on what you're using it for - what you want out of it. If you can upgrade the RAM to at least 512 or even 1 gig, that's a great price. The processor speed will probably be sufficient. And you can buy an external hard drive for large files too. The RAM can be purchased for around $30-40 at Newegg.com and you can find external harddrives there too or on Ebay.
But for $100, if it's all working correctly and undamaged, that's a great price if you can upgrade it. Just don't try to put Vista on it, it's a big resource hog.

2004 notebook P4 :
if everything is working then its a good price.
Plus you may upgrade it sooner or later with
additional RAM and high capacity hard drive. To suit
your needs.
check : screen
and battery pack - they should be in acceptable state.
battery should last 1+ hour and screen with few light scratch
here and there is ok.
Also its good to know how many USB ports it has ?
It may serve the purpose of a portable computer. College work, school or office work would do fine.Like word, excel, power point and internet surfing. if thats what you want.

well the only thing negative i can say is you wont have any battery life. maybe 30 mins - an hour depending if you will use wireless or not.
the 256 i would up grade to at least 512 max i believe would be a gig anyways.
harddrive is a good for a laptop if you gonna do mostly work and a bit of music. i just dont recommend massive video and music downloading.
i think you should try to at least put it down to 75 bucks but thats just me since you wont have any warrenty. if not borrow it and take it to a computer shop to see if you can update it with no problems.

If it will take more ram and the screen is okay, then yes it's a good buy. The battery may not be any good, tho. So, you'll have to invest in some ram and a battery, which will bring your total up.

Sounds like a bad idea. You can get 40gig or more in a new Dell for $500 if not lower.
Penny wise, pound foolish - don't be.

Unless you really have no money, I WOULD NOT buy a 3-year old computer. I don't believe amount of Ram is sufficient. I presume there's no warranty.

Dell makes a good desktop but their notebooks are not worth a nickel. I don't know what your budget is but I prefer IBM notebooks, HP would be another option.

Absolutely, it could be a mini production computer. You could download a lightweight Linux distro and install it on there. It's not too resource hungry, so it could be a pretty efficient computer.
