The media can have a great influence on behavior either way...positive or negative. However, that influence is usually negative. The media only shows you a very small portion of what goes on in the world. They only choose to show negative events because showing a story about little Billy getting an A on his science exam probably wouldn't result in very high ratings. People are attracted to disaster. When you see an accident along the highway everyone usually slows down to look at it and see what is going on.
A perfect example would be school shootings. There were a lot less school shootings before Columbine. A lot of outcast kids looked up to those criminals as heroes and followed their example after it was televised nationally.
Also studies show that people who watch the news are more depressed and have more unrealistic perspectives of the world than people who don't...so be sure not to watch too much!

Read this carefully...
The influence of the media is positive...for the criminal.
Here's why...
Let's say the media reports an armed robbery. They will actually give more detail about the firearm used than anything else. That gets the anti-gun people all fired up (no pun intended). Then, someone runs off and passes a law to limit the regular citizen from attaining their own.
As a result, there are more stories because the criminal now knows that it's harder for someone to defend themself.

Negative. You never hear the good news. With crime in the forefront of most media many people get a lopsided view of crime. They think that crime is rampant and you could get rapped and robbed almost any-day. The fact is, It's not. We just hear more of it. The chances are pretty slim.

Negative because media emcompasses the biggest influence among people in society. Specially to minors. Parents must give supervision and guidance to their children to avoid violence. Today, one of the problems is juvenile delinquency brought about by influence of media including internet websites containing violent and immoral contents.Mostly, people who are exposed to media are the ones influenced by the bad effects of media
