i need to reinstall windows xp,but my laptop will not recognize my external cd drive.is there a way to get it to like by changing bios?see my laptop wont do anything but run the screen like to run in safe mode over and over and wont run windows in any mode.it is a compaq nc 4000.i appreciate any help,thanx.

Did your external drive come with an install disk?
A lot of CD drivers have a separate stand alone installer that works by itself.
If so, you may be able to install the drive first before installing Winxp
You can also install the drive from safe mode using the windows installer.

I do believe to change the BIOS you would hit F2 to get to the BIOS and boot from the CD. Then it should take you to the Windows XP screen and press any key to start. Good Luck!

you have to enter the bios and under the boot tab, change the order to boot from the cd drive first.
