and how about 4 staples. it's a standard ethernet cable, 100 ft. long, and i was trying to staple it against a wall, and missed....4 times. and after 3 staples straight through the middle of the cable it still worked, then i put one more just barely through the edge of it and it doesn't work now.

Bob Villa would be proud that you tried. Probably would have told you to use the right product for the job though.

The last staple probably cut a wire or shorted two of them, you just got lucky with the others.

Now -- Please dont try to splice it just run a new one and get some 3M hold down clips.

If you break one of the 8 internal wires it will not work. It the staple passe through 2 or more internal wires it will cause a short and will not work. If you are lucky and the staple passes through the cable without disturbing any of the 8 internal wires it will work, but this seldom ever happens.

You sound like the type of person who might win a Darwin award. For gods sake, dont try stapling mains cables to the wall ;-)

There are 4 pairs of wires in the cable, but only two are used. If you hit the right two, you lose.

Cheers!
