These books are quite old (so I'm showing my age)...but I found them both to be very scary...Rosemary's Baby and The Mephisto Waltz. I think they're both written by Ira Levin.

I think the name was "It" and about a clown. Big fat book and I had to leave the hall light on at night for nearly two months after I read it. I also discontinued reading Stephen King.

Stephen King never scared me.
Only one book ever gave me a nightmare and it was a collection of short stories, part of the Chtulhu Mythos collection. Not all of the stories were scary but there was one in which my imagination took over and that night . . . *shudder*

Santa Evita by Tomas Eloy Martinez. I wasn't looking for scary and I wasn't expecting scary but there it was. Will finish reading it in daylight only.

'The Omen' by Stephen King
The atmosphere in it was really creepy and somehow it seemed like it could have been true.
