Don't get me wrong I think is one of the best and definately in the HOF but lets look at some stats.

Larry Bird did better than Jordan in every stat except for career points and points per game. Yes Jordan has 6 titles but the nba was much weaker in the 90's. How many titles would the Celtics have won if there was no Lakers in the 80's. There was good competition in the 90's but nothing close to the 80's.

If you want to go soley on titles there are plenty of players that have more than 6 titles. Bill Russel for example has 11.

Jordan was able to take over games but so was Bird. No matter what you need Bird would deliver. A rebound, steal, score, anything.

I am bias because Bird is my favorite player. I just don't understand how everyone is so quick to say Jordan is the best ever.

J DUB you proved my point. There was not much top notch talent in the NBA at the time. Just beacuse there was noone close to Jordan during his playing time does not automatically make him the best ever.

ROBBY G, when did MJ beat larry for a title in anything, Im 33 yrs old and never saw, or even heard of that. He did beat Magic for #1 though.

LMFAO...........Jordan didnt get in trouble.!?*! The ignorance of young people!

Where shall I begin..............................

1. Gambling problems - such a problem we hear of million $ bets on one shot in golf, Mike wins, you pay. Mike loses, you have a tough time collecting your winnings. (EVER WONDER WHY HIS DAD WAS KILLED?)

2. Rumors he made bets with mobsters. (EVER WONDER WHO KILLED HIS DAD?)

3. Jordan was famous for riding his teammates and alienating some of them if they didnt play better. Look at what he did to Kwame Brown before he left the Wizards! Jordan said such awful things to and about Kwame that he still hasnt been able to shake that **** out off his mental.

Mike took the game to the next level...............No, MAGIC & LARRY DID THAT. WHEN THEY SAT DOWN THEY PASSED THE TORCH TO HIM! It was on TV!

All Mike did was sell shoes and sell out arenas as the leagues greatest attraction.

"here ye here ye come one and all to see tha guy who can score 60/game and still lose".

Everyone Marvels at the 60 jordan put up on the Celtics in the playoffs that year but they very seldom mention that the Bulls lost that game and that LARRY hit MJ for 50plus that night.

Jordan was chossen by the league the same way Jerry West sorry one title havin self was, in order to market the league, and thats the bottom line!

first of all, jordan is not the best of all time. the age old saying is still significant: JOrdan couldn't win without phil and pippen. And as for not having a sidekick! The 72-10 team had coach of the year, defensive player of the year, 6th man of the year, mvp in jordan and first team all nba in pippen.

As for changing the game and face of the nba...stern and nbc had a lot to do with that. jordan came when everybody else was leaving. bird, magic, kareem, isiah and the rest of the 80's players were leaving. Stern gave jordan the NBA on a silver platter.

The greatest player of all time is Lew Alcindor (KAreem Abdoul-Jabbar). He was the greatest high school player coming out, greatest college player, also won 6 championships and was named rookie of the year and mvp in the same season. In college, his freshman squad beat the defending national champions. Kareem won in 2 eras. When he got to MIlwaukee the BIg O was old. He led an expansion team to the finals in just 3 years! He then went to LA and won 5 championships. He was the focal point of the offense until the '85 season. He created a shot nobody could block and was purely dominate and played until his 40's.

He was the best, dont even talk about Jordan and his watered down 90s competition.

Uh...Dude, I am originally from Boston...and I'm a Celtic fan all the way...Yes, even this year when they are the worst team in the league...but even I say that Michael Jordan is the best player ever to wear an NBA uniform...To answer the Bill Russell question, the game is a lot faster now than it was when Russell played...and that is largely due to Jordan...

I don't have much of an argument to your point other than the Detroit Pistons were a great team with Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer (hope i spelled that right), Dennis Rodman, John Salley, Vinny Johnson, and the best Jordon stopper in the league, Joe Dumars.
I think in the future, as long as he continues to put up good numbers and wins some championships, allot of people may end up saying that Lebron James is the best ever.

The reason people think he was the best ever is because when he came around the NBA was changing to the new style you see today where players can shuffle their feet b4 driblling and can carry alot. They also let the take 3 steps most of the time. I saw an interview with wilt chamberlin and bill russel one time and they said "when we played the they made rules to make it harder for us, and nowadays they try to make it easier[to score]." Another reason is he was on all those chapionship teams and was the guy who stepped it up in the 4th quarter. Most people don't remember the whole game, they just remember the final possesion, in which he was really good.

i totally agree with you there were so many great players and still some how Michael is chosen as the best of all time no matter what. I think that Larry bird was a fantastic player so was wilt chamberlain i think there are so many great players but the NBA shadows them because of Jordans 6 rings

Jordan single hand took the game to the next level. There was no side kick during Jordans reign....like Bird and Magic....Wilt and Oscar.

I would agree with everything you have to say. People are quick to call him the greatest because Jordan was able to captivate people with his high flying dunks and just his attitude and passion for the game. His style of play was revolutionary.

Because he handled himself well. Ever hear stories about him feuding with his coach or teammates? Ever hear stories about him raping girl?

But MJ is not the best. Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Bill Walton, or Bill Russell could easily be argued as the best of all time. I think of them as the best not sequentially, but productively: 1x1x1x1x1... and so on.
