My screen resolution is set at 800x600 and I can't get it to go any higher. It used to be a lot better but it won't work anymore. I get the message "out of scan range" when I try to det it higher. I think that I have to update the driver but I am not sure how to do it. Can anyone explain how it is done?

You do not need a driver.

There is a trade off between resolution and refresh rate.

As you increase either the horizontal scan rate increases. Most CRT monitors are limited by the maximum horizontal scan that they can work with, so if you up your resolution you need to decrease your refresh rate.

However, if you decrease the refresh rate under 75 Hz you are going to start to get flicker.

You may want to consider investing in a new monitor.

It might not be set at the right speed on the video card. Check to make sure you video card is at the right hertz setting. If that doesnt help, then try going to the manufacurers website to download the driver for the monitor.
