My fiance bought me 3 carats and it is just big enough! Don't go too big then it is tacky. Oh and go with platinum, better quality

Don't spend beyond your means please. Getting married means being responsible. I'd rather have a smaller ring and have my partner and I save more money for a nice down payment on a house. LOL! They say 2 months salary is the general rule of thumb. Ask one of her friends to take a look at the ring and see what they think. I think it's more important that she like the style than the actual size. All in all, it sounds pretty nice. Good going on the 18K..just make sure the gold isn't too soft. I had an 18K bangle that would scratch up like crazy.

Depends. Figure out the most that you can REASONABLE afford, and simply get her the best ring you can for that price. That is the most she should expect from you. Anything more would suggest materialism and shallowness, two things that will make for an unhappy marriage.

There are a lot of jewelry people out there who will say "two months pay" or "one months pay." I can't speak for your girlfriend, but my wife told me that had I paid that much on the ring, she would have thought I was nuts. Would not have bode well for our relationship! That old myth was written by jewelers trying to make a buck off of you. The sad thing, though, is that a lot of girls expect it now.

aww that is cute that you are buying a ring!! I think that a girl doesn't care what kind of ring but the dimond should be big yet in your price range!! Wait what am i talking about it does matter, the girl won't except a ring that you can afford with a quarter! But buy something in your price range and it will al be good!! Just be happy if she says yes!!!

If she's with you now, then obviously money shouldn't really be that big of a factor in your relationship. You can probably afford a diamond, just don't make it enormous. I think a huge diamond looks stupid anyway. AND may I recommend, just because it's a personal belief of mine, that you ask for a conflict free diamond. And find out what she likes more, gold or silver. You could probably talk to her mom or somebody you know who could keep it a secret, but would also know what type of ring she would like.

First find out what kind of style she likes. What type of diamond cut, if she likes yellow gold, white gold, or platinum, and what type of setting (ie one big diamond or a center diamond with smaller ascent ones on the sides.) As for size get what you can afford. If she truely loves you she'll understand that you had to purchase it within your means. Also think of a creative way to propose to her. That will help you score bonus points.

one karat is the standard. For me, just knowing that my fiance went out and picked out a ring for me that he thought was beautiful made me so much happier than the ring itself. Once you two are married, you can always upgrade the diamond for a bigger one.

congrats! you should by her one that's not to big, and not to small. So i'd say about three carate. the ones that look really nice and aren't extremly expensive have a little heart in the center of the ring
