my swimming coach won't let us go to the toilet during our hour and a half long session, but encourages us to drink the standard 1 1/2 litres per hour. Is this bad for you?

I was a swimmer from the time I was in the 6th grade through senior year in high school and our practices back then were an hour and a half also and we never had a bathroom break. In the summer when we would practice 2 hours, we had one after one hour. Anyway, you will be alright. I have drank a 6 pack before on the road (I know it is illegal) and didn't stop for 3 and a half hours!

If you need a bathroom break every hour and a half you need to see a urologist, that's not normal. Pee before you get in the water even if you don't think you have to. That way you won't need a break. Your coach isn't forcing you to drink either so just take whatever fluids you feel you need. A liter and a half of water during a practice is fine, you won't have a problem.

Your coach is right on, you shouldn't be wasting his time OR your time by taking potty breaks! One of a coach's biggest pev peeves is "the pisser" who NEEDS to use the bathroom during every single practice. If you have a medical reason to use the bathroom get a note from your doctor. Otherwise, suck it up, it won't hurt you.

And, like the others have said, if you really MUST go, pee in the pool or ask between sets - and hightail it back before the next one starts!!!

Good luck!!!

To earlier answerer, your bladder won't tear, the strength exerted by the muscles holding it in would not be strong enough to hold that much pressure to tear your bladder, although obviously in the middle of swimming you don't want the pressure to suddenly 'release' but its better than your bladder tearing!

No it wouldn't be bad for you at all, long distancers (running) will often complete 4/5 hours without going to the toilet, yet still drinking constantly throughout. Yes sometimes you feel you need to go earlier but it will not hurt you to not go to the toilet for an hour and a half. The reason you're encouraged to drink that much water is because your body need around that much, so its not going to go straight to your bladder is it, your body will absorb the water and use it, its not all going to flush straight through. You're only putting in 2.25 litres of water, just because you're in water you're still sweating, your bladder could still hold the full lot if neccesary, but as you're sweating etc. it won't need to. Just go to the toilet before and you'll be quite fine. In 1 1/2 hours it won't all have been absorbed and passed through your system anyway.

Your coach should let you go to the toilet as the water you are drinking and the pressure of the water on your body will make you want to go, keeping it in can cause an infection, just leave and go to the loo!

just pee in the pool.
if your coach tells you that you can't go ask him if you can go into a corner and pee.
he'll probably be shocked and let you go to the bathroom all the times you want to.

Sounds like your swimming coach needs to learn a bit about the female alimentary and eliminatory system. If you need to go, get out of the pool and go, and t' heck with the coach. If he/she can't understand bathroom breaks, you don't need to be in his/her team; it's definitely NOT good for you to "hold it," especially if you don't have to.

Yes, it can cause a bladder or kidney infection because urine is a liquid bacteria that needs to be out of the body.
