Hopefully the used one will come with warranty. If it doesn't I'd say spend a couple hundred more and buy a new one.

I think a 600$ Mac Mini would be perfect for a 13 years old boy and perfect for homework, internet and basic games.
Just buy a screen with it and it would be perfect.
plus Macs don't have viruses so you don't need to buy him another computer or buy an antivirus program.
Mac OS X was designed for high security, so it isn’t plagued by constant attacks from viruses and malware like PCs. Likewise, it isn’t plagued by never-ending security dialog boxes like those in Vista. So you can safely go about your work — or play — without interruption.
No other operating system, Vista included, offers the rich features and simplicity of Mac OS X. And just as Vista tries to get closer (emphasis on “tries”), Mac OS X Leopard is right around the corner — ready to leap even farther ahead. Intel Core 2 Duo processors are fast. As in really fast. But unlike any PC powered by Intel, the Mac runs Mac OS X — which is optimized to squeeze every bit of performance out of Intel’s engines. And Macs are beautiful. Your son will not want to hide his future Mac in a corner of the den. He will want it front and center in your life. The Apple style shows in every detail, from its sculpted surfaces to its gorgeous Mac OS X graphics.

Hope this helps.

You ommitted a very important fact - What you're being asked to PAY for this rig;. That AMD processor is NOT a 6 core, in true technical terms, and may at best give medium performance. 8Gb RAM should be more than adequate, having that extra 8 is simply a bonus. Dependent on the price being asked, it's a reasonable setup though!!

It sounds alright. It should work well for the tasks at hand, and a little better, with room to expand. I would buy from tigerdirect.ca if I went for a new one, though. I'm Canadian also, and I love
Tigerdirect because the Canadian site always uses Canadian currency, instantly calculates tax and shipping on any item, has fast shipping, and is fantastically priced. I've ordered hundreds if not thousands of dollars from them in the past year.

That is an awesome deal and your son will be very happy. It also has enough to play most of the higher end games well which is usually a bonus with most young people. I know he'll enjoy it. For reference I have my own computer business and have been advising customers on pc purchases for years.

I find that to be a bit expensive with no monitor included and second hand. Knock off 100 and it would be about right.

Not bad if you can knock off 100$, because no monitor, and make sure you have some sort of warranty.

it's definantly not bad. now if it came with a monitor, then it would be an awesome deal, considering it's used. for a kid it should be sweet.
