Someone the other day freaked me out by telling me that a bubble got into her IV and it freaked me out and I can't stop thinking about it. She said that the bubble reached her lungs and she couldn't breath but can you imagine if it would've reached her heart. I'm now completely freaked out about this. Is this a common problem. How safe are IV's? I don't want to die!! LOL I'm about to give birth anyday now and I'm worried?

the lumen of an IV tube is extremely narrow, you could have a whole line of air run into your vein, and it would create less of a bubble than what the heart creates naturally just by pumping. The person that told you that, was not correct, don't know if they were lying for the heck of it, or just thought their shortness of breath was related to the IV. So don't obsess about the IV line, even if you see a little bubble in it, it isn't going to hurt you.

It is true that air in IV tubing can cause embolisms....however, according to my doctor it would take over an entire tubing length to cause any problems. I had the same fear you have when I had my first IV and saw a few little bubbles going in the line. The small bubbles are filtered out in the lungs. It would take an ENOURMOUS amount to cause you any trouble. Relax and enjoy the new addition to your family!!!

Considering the amount of people who get IV's then i say IV's are pretty safe. I never heard of a bubble getting into one. Perhaps you are just nervous due to your pending birth.. you will be fine. Trust me you have a bigger chance of getting hit by a cow then trouble with the IV

Oh and congrats on the baby

RELAX. You are stressed which will cause stress on your baby.
Think of the MILLIONS of people who have had IV's who have no problems WHAT-SO-EVER. Don't stress yourself over something that is so miniscule. Think about the day that your baby is born, and you will be able to hold him or her in your arms.
Stop worrying about your IV. Not to worry.

it is called an air embolism. it is safe to get IVs. it can happen a number of ways. most of them related to surgeries and shunts not IVs. don't freak out or it will make you panic when getting the iv during labor, which you want and need. explain your fear to your doctor and nurse.

Sweetie it's the stress and pregnancy hormones talking... just try to relax, and dont worry, my mom has been a nurse for 25 years and has never heard of this happening before.

IVs are very safe. They're used routinely, and wouldn't be so if they weren't safe. You have nothing to fear.
