ok ive donloaded MAME but how do i play? it just says the whole thing like it's a console thing. how do i input a prompt to get it to play? please help

If you don't understand command prompt version why don't you use the windows based one? MAME32, MAMEFX, or MAMEplus. There are plenty of questions resolved that answer your question.

try associating the file extension of the rom with the exe of the MAME program. then double-click on the rom file in explorer. sorry i can explain better if you don't get it
