Canada did not participate in the War of Independence, they stayed loyal to the UK. A lot of loyalists living in the USA fled to Canada. The United States that broke away as a result of the war proceeded to buy up pieces of land from the French (eg Louisiana Purchase) and taking over Mexican land after the USA-Mexican War. Canda was not up for sale and the USA never thought it was worth trying to invade. Even if they'd wanted to, the UK would have declared war on the USA in retaliation.
Here are some excellent animations that shows the development of Canada and the USA:

In the position of Head of State she hold no real power, it is more to show the close relationship of Commonwealth countries.

Canada is not part of the the United States because the northern British colonies (Quebec, Nova Scotia, and St. John's Island) chose not to join the revolt of the southern colonies that became the United States.
The Queen being Canada's head of state basically means that the government's legitimacy is through her, rather than through the will of the people as in a republic. In practice, it makes no real difference whatsoever.

The queen as head of state means that no politician can be.
Consequently democracy is almost guaranteed as the armed forces owe allegiance to the "crown" rather than a president or prime minister, who might attempt a coup.
Canada is not part of the US because she remained part of the British Empire (later Commonwealth) and did not seek independence in 1776.
The whole of North America was British, with the 'US' part being British first while parts of Canada were taken from the French.

When the original 13 colonies broke away from English rule parts of what is now Canada might've joined them, but they did not, and English rule solidified there throughout the revolutionary period. That made certain that the U.S. and Canada would remain separate countries.
Canada is a "Commonwealth" country but the Queen has no real power, the same as in the United Kingdom where she is a figurehead, nothing more.

Because America cannot handle her on problems yet that's why most of the world "hate" we Americans. Keep Canada for the Brits or the Frenchies, we don't want it!

It will be soon. There are moves afoot by the Secret Rulers Of America to unite Canada, USA and Mexico into one economic unit. They will still have their own governments but their strings will be pulled by the 9 international bankers who run the Fereral Reserve.
