How do you feel about second homes? Are they a viable commodity that people should enjoy if they can afford it? Or are they a symbol of excess, that damages the livelihoods of people who live in rural areas that can't afford to buy their own homes?

I do not think there should be tax advantages provided to the second home. Only the primary residence. I also think vacation homeowners should foot the regular tax bill in the place where their vacation home is and not a special fee. In the summertime season, the need for a police force often expands and it's the permanent residents who are paying it while it's the summer folk who are the cause of the need in the first place.

You talk about just rural folks, but housing is also a real problem when snowbirds take over the affordable housing in more mid urban areas. Granny and Gramps are using services for 4-5 months in sunny Texas or AZ, yet most of the taxes they pay go to their home state. In Florida, schools are way underfunded because Granny and Gramps don't want to pay for FL children to go to school (why should they? Their grandkids go to school in OH).

If you can afford two homes, you can pay the full taxes on that second home.

I totally agree with Doodlestuff's answer. And its so nice and peaceful when the summer people are gone. And our community is NOT dependent on the summer peoples spending. We are a rural town with hard working people where most people own their own homes.

I would say that your right about your neighbor, this is a getting even thing. The only thing you can really do is make sure your dog don't go anywhere near his property or he may shoot it and get away with it. Sorry i know that is not what you want to hear.

They are property. People should be free to own and exchange property as they see fit, without regard to anyone else's judgment about whether or not they have excess property, whether in total or of a specific kind.
