The Sputnik launch was in 1957, but it only heightened feelings of vulnerability in the US, not so much the existing US-USSR tensions.

The downing of the U2 spy plane was in 1960, so too late for the period.

The stated mission of the 1955 summit was to reduce international tensions.

Khrushchev promoted the concept of "peaceful coexistence" beginning in 1953 in an attempt to reduce hostility between the two superpowers particularly in light of the possibility of nuclear war.

I'm not sure if there's a correct answer. Could be Sputnik, but I wouldn't agree with that point of view.

In my opinion, the overthrowing of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in Persia in 1953 and Guatemala's democratically-elected president Jacobo Arbenz Guzmán in 1954, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 were more important.

I am unaware that there was ever a period of "reduced tension" between the US and USSR in the 1950s; however, only the first two would be possibilities and I think that the U2 was shot down in the early 60s in a vague sort of way, so I would go for Sputnik, which was launched in about 57, I think. I can remember the horror and chagrin in this country when that happened because it demonstrated that we were behind the USSR in the space race, and who knew what else.
