The short answer is yes, an overdose of Diphenhydramine (Sominex, Nytol, Benadryl) can cause death. The heart can go into sinus tachycardia, an abnormal rhythm.

When I was 25, I survived an attempt, using an overdose of Nytol. However, that was only because of a call to 911, before I lost consciousness and a nurse-paramedic who refused to quit giving me CPR. That was over 31 years ago. In high doses, many non-prescription drugs can be dangerous and even fatal.

PLEASE: If you're even thinking about harming yourself or someone else, ask for help! I still regret my suicide attempt, because, I didn't think I had much of a future and I was completely wrong. Since then I've turned my life around and had many wonderful blessings. I was extremely lucky to have survived and I'm very thankful I did.

I thought Nytol was herbal and didn't know you could overdose on herbs.

I also had, my friend took 30 & it didn;t do anything (he did it twice).....I tell you, suicide has grave consequences & please tell your friend it might seem like the easy way out now but believe you me, he WILL regret it over many many life-times...
if life is too much, tell your friend to ask God: Please God this situation is to much for me, please You handle it..Ipromise you he will.
