I don't remember republicans kicking hundreds of thousands of people off welfare.

But the Democrats sure did back in the 1990's.

Them democrats even CUT education funding back in the 1990's, untill the republicans booted them out of congress and increased it again.

We are not really helping the people of Iraq. We are helping corporate interests. Most of that trillion dollars will go to Aegis Defense Systems, Halliburton, CACI, SAIC, Blackwater, Titan, and other US corporate concerns.

So far we have killed lots more Iraqi civilians than Saddam did--even if we include those we provoked into a rebellion we promised to support (and then reneged).

Conservatives do like giving assistance to needy americans--they donate quite a bit to charity. But they like to decide for themselves just who to donate to personally, they don't like having the government manage assistance, even if the government does a better job. If I buy some needy person a meal, I can make sure the money I spend goes to my friend Sam, in the restaurant business. It's good for me and good for Sam, and the needy person gets something out of it too. And all those needy people I don't like--they can starve. As a conservative, it is nice to be able to discriminate that way.

Conservatives support Bush's "Faith Based Initiative" because then churches can discriminately pass out federal funds. And, who would ever imagine these funds might be distributed for purely partisan political purposes? Who could guess that might have happened, if we tried to knock the wall separating church and state? David Kuo didn't.

Ha!

Because all too often a needy American is a lazy American.

Why should I work my tail off so that more of my money goes to people who are unwilling to work for themselves. Why should my tax dollars go to illegal aliens? Why should i have to provide free health care to them?

Why do I lose 40% of my income to the government while the same person making 20k isn't taxed a dime?

The fact of the matter is not all men are created equal. Some are smarter. Some work harder. Some are more beautiful or more athletic. Why should exceptional people be punished so that the unexceptional can continue to drift through life on the public doll.

Your premise is incorrect. I'm in a local civic group that helps the salvation army raise money, sponsors a food kitchen and several other programs for the homeless, has a fund to help people in emergencies like house fires, and sponsors a program to help disadvantaged kids learn to read. Almost every member besides myself (libertarian) is a conservative republican.

Conservatives and Libertarians don't hate giving assistance to the needy. That's where you're totally mistaken. What they hate is having to do it under the threat of government force. Speaking for myself only, I also object to helping the needy by creating a bureaucracy whose head will probably make $150,000 per year. It doesn't seem like a good use of money to me.

They don't. They actually give far more. You're comparing inefficient, ineffective, high overhead government programs with helping people. Conservatives believe government should have no place in forcefully redistributing your money(via taxes). For maps and graphs proving conservatives give more to charities than liberals do go here: http://taxprof.typepad.com/taxprof_blog/2005/11/generosity_inde.html

I also think that some of the reasons liberals favor social programs over charitable giving deal more with their inability to trust people to do the right thing and that they just don't want to sully their hands with(or be reminded of) the needy. That and social programs create a class of people completely dependent on the government. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime.

If we tried to give people in our own country one trillion in aid how much do actually think would get to them anyway with the corrupt local and state gov. politicians standing in the way I don't think half of it would reach them. Then what when they do get their handout they will just blow it and want another handout. I believe in hardwork myself if you don't like your standing in life nobody is stopping you from going out and getting a better job and better education andworking your butt off to improve your situation. I give to charity all the time I just don't like the idea of the government taking more of my hard earned dollars and giving it away for social programs that just end up keeping the people they are trying to help trapped in a cycle of poverty. Why do people like you have such a problem helping out other nations less fortunate than ourselves? How did you get that dems did that jeepers lol? That was newt gingrich behind welfare reform at the head of the republican congress, where do you people come up with this stuff.

your question is much like : "hey Steve? have you stopped beating your wife?"

It makes assumptions and precludes answers.

A true conservative( historically) is not into nation building as evidenced by the writings of the Founding Fathers. Neither does a conservative hold with the idea of a strong federal government which the writers of the federalist papers surely turn in their graves.

As a conservative I recognize the desire for liberals to accomplish many worthwhile goals through the power of the state. I just do not believe that this is the most effective way to accomplish those goals and indeed carries with it many undesirable and unintended consequenses.

I think you're wrong about conservatives - we gladly help needy Americans, and we're not happy about the money being spent in Iraq.

The US Government was not created to give out charity assistance. Charity work should be done by citizens and charity organizations. Unfortunately, both parties are guilty of handing out billions to foreign countries throughout our nations great history.

Conservatives give way more than liberals. Liberals want to use tax dollars for that, while conservatives give additional support.

Besides, the Department of Health and Human Services still has a larger budget than the Department of the Defense.
