Well, that depends: from whose perspective? The modern US, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, South America, Native Americans, Aborigines?
For each group, a different day would undoubtedly be the darkest. For instance, when Columbus landed in Hispaniola in 1492, that was probably one of the darkest days in the history of Native Americans. Or when the British shipped the first wave of convicts to Australia, that was a pretty dark day for the aboriginal population. Or when Alexander the Great swept across Central Asia, those were very dark days for the peoples of those regions.
So you really have to be more specific about defining for whom the days are dark...
