It was Willie Hernandez of the World Champion Detroit Tigers. He was not used the same way as the closers are now. He pitched 140 innings; there are starters now that have trouble doing that.

Although he was commonly known as "Willie" his real name was Guillermo (pronounced Ghee-yare-mo). Shortly after he won the MVP and Cy Yound Award his son started calling himself "Willie". Dad Hernandez got mad and told his some that was not his name, it was Guillermo. When he realized that he was losing his heritage going by Willie, he changed his public name to the proper name Guillermo.

Willie Hernandez, he pitched for the tigers. He went 9-3 but had 32 saves. He also won the Cy Young that year
