No as long as you are only wanting to run adsl on one computer only. you need a modem for one computer and a router for two or more as the router's job is to divide the connection on all computers connected to the adsl network.
If you do get a router then there are two sorts. One is a router that you need to connect a modem to it and another type is router with a modem built in.

Not essential, but even for connecting just one PC I'd recommend using a router. The router can be left on all the time and keep the connection stable. Some ADSL modem/routers have a single ethernet port (for either 1 PC, or to connect to your LAN - my LAN has over a dozen PCs on it) but most these days have four ports.

If you use a USB modem, then the internet connection may 'go to sleep' and you need to reconnect. A router will normally re-try if the link to the exchange / ISP ever fails, and finally, as someone else has suggested, a router will often add some security (most routers act in a mode where incoming packets are only accepted if they have been requested, so it is like a firewall, blocking attacks on your PC(s).

I can recommend the Zyxel Prestige 660R-661 (about 25 pounds) - it works very well on DSL Max.

A router is only necessary if you plan on sharing the internet connection between one or more computers. Your adsl connection more then likely has provided you with the modem necessary to connect to the service. If u only have one pc, that is all that is required.

Only if you have the needs for many users, most broadband routers will come with 4 ports already.

not if you only have one computer, if you need to hook up more then one computer to the dsl internet then , you may have a extra port on the back of the dsl modem, or you will need a router, or switch (wich is old school but easier to use)

It's not necessary, but recommended for security reasons. If you're connected directly to the internet your computer is more vulnerable to attack.
