I have a friend who has two children with cochlear implants. They have had very good results. The older child had some problems at first, but his hearing loss wasn't diagnosed as early as his brother's. The younger child has had very few problems and you really hardly notice the implants. These kids are able to play baseball and basketball and do all of the usual kid activities. The oldest is in my daughters class and the only thing we ever notice is sometimes you have to tap him to get his attention, he also reads lips. But his younger bother doesn't seem to have any problems at all. I think it is because they weren't aware of the hearing loss with the older boy for a time and they had the younger boy tested at birth and he got his implant at an earlier age. Try not to worry about your grandson. These two boys I know are just your average kids, and while the kids in their classes know about the implants I don't think anyone ever teases them or gives them a hard time or even really notices the implants.

I had them but when I was 7, I was 80% deaf in one ear & 20% in the other I was bullied at school by both the teachers & other kids so my mum changed my school & within 1 week they discovered I was nearly deaf!
I was constantly going backwards & forwards to the hospital for tests after I had the implants but within 1 year my hearing was officially back to normal - I have not had any problems since!!

My niece had one when she was 18months, she is now almost 4 and is really progressing with her speech and she understands everything that is said to her now. She goes to a 'normal' daycare and is expected to start school with other hearing children with no problems.
It was really tough to begin with and not having had the aural input for so long did take a lot of work to counter, but it has been worth it in the long run.
I bought her the Babysenses DVDs which my sister says has been really helpful.

my 2 year old cousin had one put in. he seams to be responding to it but its hard to tell sence you really cant see what he is hearing. he also has other problems though too (genetic). i dont remember what the problem is call but it is really rare. there have only be about 50 know cases all of which were discovered after birth except my cousin's, his problem was discovered in the begining of the second trimester (i think).
his problem is the first one in the state of michigan where we live.
