It has been a reoccuring problem that students have had their lunch Taken Away but the lunch ladies durring lunch do to their accounts being negative. Today 1/4 of my lunch shift had their lunch trays ripped out of their hands. I myself had .60 left and they took it away.
I partialy understand why, (though this question is only half of the problem)
But me and some fellow students are trying to find a law stating that the school has to provide us with lunch if we so choose. But we cant find any sites with laws. So i ask.. Is it required that they provide us with lunch?

If the school district participates in the Federal School Lunch Program, there are criteria for providing free or reduced-price lunches for qualifying students (the qualification is family income below a certain level). If you don't qualify for free lunch, you are required to pay the price set by the district for your lunch. Many schools now permit parents to deposit lunch money into a computerized account. No cash changes hands and automatic deductions are taken from that account when the student eats. It is up to the parents to replenish the account when it runs low.
The school district isn't required to provide you with a free lunch unless you qualify based on your parents' income status.
If your cafeteria operates on a cash basis, it's up to you to be sure you have enough to buy your lunch that day. Many schools sell lunch tickets good for 5 or 10 lunches. This might be a handy idea if you have trouble remembering your lunch money.

I believe it is actually mandated by federal law that ALL public schools in this nation must provide food for students of some kind. If you cannot afford lunch, they must have an alternative menu for you - this usuall means milk and a peanut butter & jelly sandwich - free of charge. Normally I would go search for a law of some sort that details this, but I unfortunately do not have the time right now. Search Thomas (link in sources). This is a site run by the US government in which you can search the text of every bill passed by Congress.

they have to if you are on the free lunch program and that is all. they should send letters home to the delinquent accounts saying they will not be supplying lunch until they are paid. but to give it to them and snatch it back is plain old wrong. its not the kids fault. and it sucks that they are more concerned about the money than the childs health.

No. They are not required by law to provide ANYONE with lunch. You can bring your own. I suggest you do so.
