I had one when i was 35 weeks pregnant...only because they wanted to check to see if my twins lungs were developed enough to be taken early (I had severe preeclampsia) They took me into a room and the nurse did an ultrasound and prepped everything and when she was ready she called the doctor (I went to a Perinatologist because my pregnancy was High risk) He came in and while they were doing the ultrasound just popped the needle in..I was terrified but it didnt hurt a bit! CLOSE YOUR EYES! Who wants to see that big needle go inside of you! So as soon as the doctor picked it up I closed my eyes so I didnt have to see it. I was very suprised at the lack of pain! I felt woosy afterwards but I rested and felt fine! Im not sure what he best week is to have one...i guess it depends on what you are getting one for!

Hurts a little but isn't so bad. I was told that the best time to have one is between 24 and 28 weeks. The bad part is the cramps after the amnio on that day.

I had one seven years ago. I thought it was uncomfortable, but the doctor told me it was all in my head. I remember trying to look at the monitor that showed where the needle was inside me, but it made me squeamish.
I had mine at 20 weeks, I think. At one point, I could see my baby's hand reaching toward the amnio needle, and the doctor saw it,and pushed on my stomach to try to move her away from the needle. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it.
I was 43, and the doctor told me that the amnio was the definitive test to look for abnormalities, I'm glad I had it. My daughter turned out perfect.....

I did not have one even though I was 35 when I had my baby in Nov 06. I did the 12 week nuchal test and the risk was low.
Amnio should be done between 20 - 22 weeks. You OB should be the one to advice you of the timing.

Don't wait too long. I had one scheduled with my middle daughter at about what they THOUGHT was 38 weeks, but by then I was "overdue" and they could not perform it, as the baby was too big and there was no safe room to withdraw the fluid without hitting the child.

my friend had one, she said it hurt a little, but they numb the skin. Your dr will know when its best to do it, but unless you have a need (advanced maternal age, family history of genetic defects, positive AFP test) you will probaably not have to do one
