YES! I am a therapist and I frequently point out that "but" translates to, "Now let me tell you what I *really* think. A longtime veteran therapist who is the father of a colleague of mine used to ask clients to "Scratch their but(t)s"

What brought this to mind for you?

Well, I think I would take both into consideration- what precedes as well as what follows, though the latter part being the conclusive portion is usually more solid & makes more sense but I think both together always gives us a complete picture.

Yes you can usually ignore the first part. Unless you discern they might be spelling it B-U-T-T then it would be important to know the preceding instructions.
They might have been telling you to do something you would not like.

it feels that way sometimes.
Such as a mother saying to her child,
I love you, but you can't hit your sister!

It is possible the child gets the impression that she will not be loved if she hits her sister.

I think the word is overused; many use it to link together sentences or idea's that would very well stand alone by themselves. Sometimes the two ideas take on a new meaning with the word 'but' in between that isn't really intended.

Fun stuff. thanks for asking.

It doesn't mean you ignore what came before unless you want to be a thoughtless jerk.
