That's Venus. If it's clear on Saturday May 19, you will see a beautiful pairing of Venus with a very thin crescent moon. Right now you also hear it called the "Evening Star" since it's so noticeable; later in the year it will be up in the mornings instead as the "morning star."

Because Venus is between us & the Sun (unlike the planets from Mars on out), we see it go through phases. So if you get a decent telescope and train it on Venus, you can see that it isn't a star -- it looks like a half-moon right about now.
