I am a special educator trying to get a tutoring/consulting business off the ground, and I tried using geocities when my friend said myspace is inappropriate for professional websites. I don't like geocities one bit because it is too constricting and plain... I don't have Front Page on my computer and I cant add it because my computer has administrator restrictions (it's a school laptop provided by the district). I like myspace because it is EASY to use, there are tons of generator sites online to make my page appealing.... but I'm not sure that people will take me seriously if I have a myspace site (since kids and adults like me use it for personal use). What do yo think? PROFESSIONAL OPINIONS ONLY PLEASE.

When running a business it is of upmost importance to make yourself look legitimate. Using MySpace as a website for your business is unprofessional; movies advertise through MySpace because:
a) They don't need to look professional, as movies are purely for entertainment
b) Advertising on MySpace is a great way to advertise to teenagers, who are big-time moviegoers.

You need to determine who your target market is. Who are you trying to advertise to, and what would be the best way to get your word out to them? In other words, if I was looking for a tutoring/consulting service, where's the first place I would look? It certainly would not be MySpace. =P

Consider hiring somebody to create a website for you, and get your own domain (http://www.companyname.com). Also, be sure to set up your own email address to be something like @companyname.com - for example, support@companyname.com. Do not use your first/last name in your email address or website URL, unless that is the name of your business. Finally, be sure to get your site listed on major search engines, such as Yahoo, Google, MSN, and Ask. If you don't know how to do any of this stuff, a good web designer should know. Sure, this is a bit of a an investment, but that's exactly what a business is: an investment that (hopefully) pays off.

Best of luck.

The message sent by any business using FREE webhosting is.. I can not afford 5-10/month for a real site so I use geocities or myspace cause I can't make enough money to do any better.

So if that is the message you want delivered.. go right ahead.

I would not take a myspace web page seriously if a prospective vendor presented it as their webpage. Have you considered utilizing Yahoo's Small Business offerings? Google has an online page creator.

If you want to create it offline you will need to download a Web page editor and an FTP client.

When you create a Web site you need to use a Web site editor. A lot of online Web site hosting services offer online Web site editors for you to use. If you aren't signed up with a hosting service that offers an online Web site editor then you will need to create your Web pages on your computer and then upload them to your hosting service, probably using FTP.

You can use the text editor that comes with Windows if you are using Windows and know how to code using HTML. It's not ideal though. You would do better do download a better HTML editor. If you don't want to use HTML there are Web site editors that will let you create Web pages without HTML.

After you create your Web pages you will need to FTP them to your hosting service. For this you will need an FTP client. Get the infomation from your hosting service on what to put into your FTP client and you will be ready to get started.

It can go either way. I have seen many movies being promoted on myspace opposed to having their own domain. I guess the reason in doing so is to advertise for free. On the other hand, I feel myspace would not be appropriate for your situation.

Don't you have to be a member of myspace to access all the features on a page anyways? I don't belong to myspace and it drives me crazy if someone directs me there and I try to click on someone's photos and it won't let me see them unless I sign up. That would REALLY put people off. Good luck!

professionally, if i were to search for a legitimate business to give my money to and their only form of advertising was a myspace profile, i would probably not take them seriously. myspace can be a fine addition to reach out to otherwise unreachable customers, but should not be counted on as a primary business tool.

Myspace is used a lot for net working but it has gotten a bad name now so it isn't very good for business purposes.
