My roommates like football. I am not really into football I came here in the U.S. a couple of years ago, and we didn't have football from where I come from. I need interesting topics that I can talk about with my roomies. Need your help. I don't want them to think I'm a snob, because I am too shy.

What is your age, situation in life (student?). Besides football what subjects do your roommates like to discuss. Have you ever tried talking about your country and the good and bad points about it. Whenever I talk to an individual from another country I like to find out as much as I can about that country. This may come from my love of travel. Maybe you want to study up on football or get your roommate to tell you some of the interesting facts or details of the game. GOOD LUCK

It would be too difficult for me to know what topics would fit you and your roommates without knowing more about you and them. Although, I've found that a card or board game can be a great catalyst for great conversations. I would strongly suggest games like: Ingenious, Eureka!; Ticket to Ride; or even Payday or Monopoly. The game is the reason to get together, but there will be topics just jumping up all over the place while you all are enjoying each other's company and gaming skills.

Ask him about his day and maybe that will open up some interesting topics. I also like the idea of using a game to stimulate conversation.

Well, you could ask them to explain the game to you, and who their favorite teams are and why. You may find it more interesting with more exposure.

Talk about classes, your friends, where they come from, what kind of work they'd like to do, what you all want your lives to be like in 10 years, movies, books, music, etc

Talk about anything that's universal. If you can talk about something someone else will relate to, then you've broken the barrier already. You could even talk about not having nothing to talk about.
