I've been spraining my ankle for the last 35 years... I'd start with laying down and putting my foot up on one or two pillows with ice for an hour or two then no ice for 30 minutes and keep repeating. No weight on it except for the bathroom. You'll need a couple of days of this depending on how bad it is. When you feel you can walk on it wrap it with an ace bandage or get an ankle brace. Even when it feels better you need to take it easy for a week or two more. Hope this helps!

Step 1: Rest, Ice (15-20 minutes every 1-2 hours), Compression (ace bandage), and Elevate ankle higher than your heart.

Step 2: After ~3 to 5 days, once the swelling has decreased, start some basic exercises to regain range of motion in your ankle. 1) Ankle pumps - point toes & foot up towards you, then point foot downward. Repeat slowly 20 times. 2) Inversion / Eversion - sit on a chair with your injured foot resting on a large towel on the floor. Move only your foot back and forth from left to right (like a windshield wiper), pulling the towel across the floor. Repeat ~10 -20 times.

Step 3) Once you can tolerate these exercises without difficulty or pain, you can progress to using stretch band / Theraband / surgical tubing to resist upward movement of your foot, and movement to the outside (to the left for your left foot, or to the right with your right foot). This will help build up the strength of the muscles surrounding your ankle, improving your stability and preventing re-injury.

Put ice on it for the first 24-48 hours to keep swelling down. After the 2nd day put heat on it. Wrap it up in an ace bandage for added support. Wear an ankle brace after a week but for the next month to allow it to really heal. Don't wear any heels and try to keep to sneakers.

Ice the area at least 4 times a day for 15 minutes at a time.
Keep it elevated(raised).
Try not to apply pressure to it for at least 3 days
If you have crutches use them if you need to
If you have an ace bandage, you might also wrap it....
Take Tylenol for the pain or Advil
GOOD LUCK and I hope you get better soon ;-)

depending on how bad it is.. the best thing to do is to ice, brace, try to stay off of it, and if it is bad enough while you are relaxing.. put it abover your heart...
When your sprain it you are stretching the ligaments around the joint.. so it becomes unstable.. the joint will swell and it will hurt to put pressure on it.. so the ice helps the swelling, the brace will help the stability of the joint, and staying off of it will help keep the pain level down...and allow it to heal faster

ICE, ICE, and more ICE, then elevation, and stay off of it! I did this once and instead of keeping off of it, I went ahead and finished my track workout. I ended up tearing a ligament and it took a piece of bone with it. I was in a cast for 6 weeks (I think?) completely ruined my track year.

alternate heat and ice, wrap it in an ace bandage and try to stay off of it as much as possible. ANd take Ibeprophen (sp?) as an anti inflamitory.
