Assuming they are RIGHT triangles, use the Pythagorean Theorem:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
1)
3^2 + 3^2 = c^2
9 + 9 = c^2
18 = c^2
sqrt 18 = c
4.24 = c
2)
16^2 + b^2 = 20^2
256 + b^2 = 400
b^2 = 144
b = 12

For both, just use a^2+b^2=c^2 (assuming these are RIGHT triangles)
1. 4.24
2. 12 (Note: you could recognize this as a classic multiple of the 3-4-5 right triangle)

I am assuming that you mean that they are right angled triangles where c is the hypotenuse.
Using Pythagoras...
a) sqrt(3^2 + 3^2) = 4.24
b) sqrt(20^2 - 16^2) = 12

if they are RIGHT triangles:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
1)
a= 3
b= 3
c= ?
c = sqrt( 3^2 + 3^2 )
c = sqrt(18)
c = 3*sqrt(2)
2)
a= 16
b= ?
c= 20
b^2 = c^2 - a^2
b = sqrt( 20^2 - 16^2 )
b = sqrt ( 400 - 256 )
b = sqrt ( 144 )
b = 12

If they're right angle triangles then a^2+b^2=c^2 (with c being the longest side). However, if they're not triangles with right angles, then the angles are needed.

1. the information given is not sufficient to decide c. We need either all the three sides or two sides and the angle between them.
2. Same situation.
