No. All defragging does is rearrange the files on the disk so that the RAM can find things easier and faster.

No! It depends which program you are using and how you are running it.

If you are using the standard windows defrag program from within windows then you ususally do not have to restart. If you are using scandisk from in windows you ususally do not need to restart it either.

If you are using another program it should tell you whether or not to restart windows and give you the option.

In short, just restart if you are worried. But generally things will be fine if you just carry on.

No you don't need to. but you may want to, just for a complete refresh. Also...always remember to do a disk cleanup before you do the disk defrag. No sense in defragging un-needed cache files.

after a defrag, not necessarily, if you have forced a scandisk I would say yes. sometimes its not a bad idea to restart when you do house cleaning just to make sure the various pointers and what all are lined up properly. even when i install a driver and it does not require a reboot, i will.

Always a good idea not just to restart but to turn off, unplug from power for a minute, plug back in and start back up.

The power thing flushes all the hardware caches.
