Congrats on having a doctor who knows how to practice! There is no reason to check unless you are going overdue or are actively laboring. Every vaginal exam brings with it a risk for infection.
Those who said that doctors who check frequently are only doing so to appease their anxious patients are spot on. There is no medical indication that routine checks need to be performed.
The baby will come when it's ready, and you don't need to know what your cervix is doing until at least 41 weeks or possibly before if the baby is suspected to be large.

Checking for dilation involves the doctor sticking his hand up there. Do you really want that?
Relax - my midwife never, ever checked for dilation. Well, not never. Twice during labour, pre C section. Some women dilate a wee bit early, and it isn't a danger or even a sign that labour is about to start. Some women walk around 1 or 2 cm dilated for weeks!
It's invasive, unpleasant, and tells you and the doctor nothing at all.
(edit - of course you have to dilate to have the baby, people. Duh. What's meant is that the baby will come out just fine whether she's dilated NOW or not)

You are really sensitive down there right now, and him messing around down there could:
1. cause an infection
2. hurt a little.
3. stimulate labor
He is right. It isn't any big deal to check. Even if he found that you were 3cm dilated, you could still take 2 minutes or 3 weeks to go into labor.
Just don't let anyone with little teeny hands check you. You will be screaming your guts out, because they will have to push really hard to get their fingers back there. I can't tell you how bad that pain is. Most men's hands are big enough to get back there, though.

Umm, I don't think the baby can come out without any dilation unless you're having a c-section. Uterine contractions (labor) really get the dilation going so there's probably no need to check it until you go into labor, then it tells you how far along your labor is. The baby certainly isn't going to fall out and you'll know when you go into labor.

i think of it relies upon upon the caregivers particular philosophy and practice. some females on no account get checked, even in the time of hard paintings (whether in scientific institution births, i think of it fairly is unusual). different females get checked each week around the thirty 5th week and then each and each 2 (or extra) hours throughout the time of the hard paintings. Edit: the clarification particularly some females p.c. to no longer get checked is by way of the fact a million. it will improve the possibility of an infection 2. dilation isn't a singularly sparkling indicator of a females's hard paintings progression 3. this is invasive and frequently uncomfortable

I really believe they only check to give the curious ,pregnant woman some idea of what's going on.
He's right. You can be completely closed, and go into labor later that night. You can also be 4cm dilated for over a week(as I was with my daughter).
Just relax, and enjoy the end of your pregnancy. Perhaps, next week, you can ask him to check. It may actually get things started ;)

Like he said, it is not necessary, if anything he doesn't want to transfer anything to you, Ir your dilated the more they check the higher risk of an infection.
After 30 hrs of hard labor, I was only dilated to Two! My second pregnancy again I didn't dial ate so they continues with meds and after 18 hrs i had my second son., V-back too!

I would praise him for not doing an uneeded exam. He is right. You could dialate from 1 to 10 in a matter of hours or it can take weeks. My wife was dialating almost 3 weeks before our daughter finally came.

I'm surprised, most ob's do a pelvic at every visit after 37 weeks. but he's right, if you are dialated or not the baby is going to come when it wants to, I was dialated to 2 for 2 weeks before my first was born.

A lot of doctors don't like to check too often because with every check comes increased chance of infection...And he is right, it doesn't really mean anything. I know it's hard not knowing, but really that is good that he is not being too invasive! Good Luck! and Congrats!!
