my 10 month old has diarrhea. he was in the hospital and given IV fluids. now he is home from the last two days. his paed had told us that it would take a while for his tummy to settle down. from this morning, however, he has shown a significant decrease in his urine output. he is breastfeeding and drinking lots of water. when i called my paed in the evening, he asked me to keep giving him water.
my baby has not had a wet diaper in the last 4 hours. what can i do?? he does not take oral rehydration solution. threatens to throw up....i dont want him to lose more fluids...should i take him to the emergency? please help!!! it is night here right now

thank you all for your help...i got on the phone with the doctor again. he explained that his body is probably replacing the fluids that was lost over the last couple of days and as long as he is feeding well and accepting water and is not fussy, he is okay. if he refuses feeding, or becomes cranky, i need to take him in to the hospital. thank you again for all your help

I'd try to get hold of the pediatrician again and tell him your concerns. If you can't get hold of him, I'd head to the emergency room. Your little guy is probably fine, but if you have any doubts (and Mom instincts are good), it's best to be safe.
I hope he's wet a diaper by the time you read this.

He's probably fine. With him being exclusively breastfed, I'd look at your habits. Have you had loose stools lately? Have you been more stressed than normal? Have you eaten something new? Babies really pick up on Mom's feelings and moods, so it could be something coming from you. As long as he's eating well, I'd not worry about it. An average schedule at 2 months is feeding every 3-4 hours (is what my son did). As long as he's nursing well and you are drinking lots of water, then don't worry about it. Signs of dehydration are no tears, a drastic decrease in urination (8-10 is a healthy number), and the skin not bouncing right back if pressed. It sounds like your son is perfectly fine.

Sometime these doctors will tell U anything just to get you off the phone. Take your baby to the hospital immediately. I would not play with that at all. When you went the first time, they probably did not find the real problem. If he has not urinated in 4 hour like you said that is something to play with all. Even if your baby does eat, he at least needs to be drinking regularly.

keep pushing the water, and try freezing the pedialite into popsicles, thats how my son would take it. If his urine is light yellow he is still ok, if it gets dark yellow or brown he nneds to go back to the hospital. Good luck

Dehydration measured with diapers is 8-12 hours with no urine output. Try pedialyte popcicles- or freeze what you have in ice trays. Good luck.
Also, if he is making tears he is not dehydrated...
