I would recommend that you buy the GST to begin with. Although the GS(and RS models for that matter) are considerably cheaper, turbo kits for the 420a motor are expensive. For a stage 1 kit you will need to spend $2500 to equal the power of the GST. And the stage 2 kit is $3000. The only two kits on the market right now are Star which uses a T3/T4 turbo and Hahn which uses a Mitsubishi turbo. So even though you are saving money, probably around 2 grand ,you still have to shell out more cash when buying the turbo kits. Unless, you have the knowledge to put together a custom kit for yourself...On the other hand, if you bought a GST or GSX to begin with, you could be easily pushing 250-275hp with that kind of money.

The better option would be the GST. An even better option than that is the GSX (all wheel drive turbo).
By the time you buy a GS and spend around $3000 on a turbo kit then you might as well just have bought a GST. Also if you are looking at a 95-99 GS they will now be between 8 and 12 years old with probably quite a few miles on it. The engine needs to be in really good shape for a turbo kit. You don't want to have to rebuild the engine just so you can put a turbo kit. That would be a lot of money.

GSTs would be the choice. You're much better off rebuilding the 4g63 than strapping a turbo on an aging 420a. That being said, pay particular attention to crank shaft during rebuild (I would replace it with a HKS one) as the 2G 4g63 engines are prone to crank walk.
The 4g63 engine is a robust engine dating from the first evos in Japan. The 420a is a engine that was developed jointly by Mitsubishi and Dodge. Plymouth may have been involved but I'm not sure about that.
Another thing to consider is the fact that the internals of the 4g63 are much harder than that of the 420a. The stock internals can hold up past 24 lbs of boost while it's not advisable to push past 8 lbs on the 420a, just like if you're strapping a turbo to any naturally aspirated car.
As to the questions of GSs not being driven as hard as the GSTs, from personal experience, poseurs with GSs tend to want to race people at stop lights than the average GST driver.

i would get hte gs-t. a GS SUCKS with a turbo. the engine is a piece of junk and will not tune good. it is always harder to upgrade a NA engine than an engine that comes stock turbo. all you will need to do is get a bigger turbo, get a new boost controller, and have the engine tuned. a turbo kit will cost you atleast 3K. A gs stick might be driven even harder than a gts because generally most street racers know how to drive and non-street racers that can't shift as well are the only ones that bought the GS.

The GS is a neon motor that has a history of head gasket problems. If you want a Mitsubishi turbo the GTS or GSX is the way to go. Buy a 6 cylinder eclipse and you won't miss the turbo.

Try pricing the cost for an engine replacement and then compare the total investment to the price of another running Eclipse. Do not plan on finding a lot of replacement engines out there in salvage yards, it seems that blowing the engines in Eclipse's is a pretty common event. Which is why I would suggest passing on this car. Around here there are plenty of Eclipse's with good bodies and no motors.

The GST's were full of problems. Mainly the turbo would blow the hose off. Or blow itself apart.
I have heard that the GS engine isn't really designed for a turbo, and in the long run the turbo will stress the engine until it quits.
Put you money into normally asperated tuning.
Or take a look at the Subaru Imprezza turbo, they have a strong reliable TC engine

if i was in your situation i would just buy a gst, because you do not have to spin that much money just to upgrade a turbo and you will have to tune it also.
