I know that the convertible car seats go up to 40 lbs for a child, so I guess what I am asking is... How old are children when they hit about 40 lbs? I want to know if it is worth buying a more expensive car seat that looks alot more comfortable if they will be in it longer than a year.

A child needs to be in a rear facing car seat until they are 20# and 1 year old. After that, they may face forward in any weight appropriate car seat. 40# generally is around 4 years old, at which time they can be converted to a booster seat.

It all depends. My five year old (almost six) only weighs around 44 pounds...she's just very skinny.

By the same token, my friends have a kid that's about a year old and weighs 30 lbs.

But if the year mark is the magic number for you, it would be astounding were your child heavier than 40 lbs at 12 months...24-36 months is more likely before they get there.

The other thing you should check on with the car seats is how TALL the kid can be and safely be in there...that's what got my daughter into a booster seat...she got too tall.

My oldest was 40 pounds at 2 and had to be moved to a booster seat, but generally, they are in convertible seats for several years. We always get the really nice, comfortable ones because they spend a lot of time in them and we like our seats to be comfortable.

My son is 4 and weighs about 36 lbs. He hasnt used the car seat your talking about in a long time! I moved him into the next car seat as soon as he was big enough b/c the convertable on was too tight on his legs even though he was within the weight and height range. Its also so much bulkier. He outgrew it by height faster than by weight. I wouldn't spend as much on this one. My son is now in the car seat that converts to a high back booster. They are in them for a long time so put your money in that one

My son had to go to a convertable seat at 5 months (should have been four but we took a long time to buy it). He was 20lbs at 4 months, he is 14 months now and around 30lbs. So he still has quite a long way to go in his seat.

So he has used it for a year and will probably use it at least another year I would imagine. According to the CDC growth chart kids rach 40lbs between 3.25 and 6.75 years of age, with 4.75 being average.

Buy a car seat that will hold a child up to 80lbs. because in most states there is a law that says 8 years or 80lbs your child has to be before they are allowed to stop using the booster seat. so get one that will allow you to use it rear facing, front facing, and as a booster.

til they reach 50 pounds.. i think you should buy the safest one, even if its the most expensive. you could always sell it later..
