I've heard it before, and it's just as charming every time I hear it.

The problem is that W never said it, and contrary to the wishful thinking of Republicans, neither did Gore. Or John Kerry.
(I've seen it attributed to all three.)

It wasn't Dan Quayle, either, though it was first mentioned in connection with him.

It's a fiction, like many --- maybe even most --- of the misattributed dumb quotes that circulate on the Web and occasionally even get passed along by news organizations that should know better.

The "quote" you cite was actually created by MAD magazine writer Al Jaffee for an October 1991 feature called "Future Quayle Quotes We Can Expect to Hear."
