Algebraic Expression...the "x" variables represents the hypotenuse which, is the longest side of a triangle.

a = 6
b = 8
c = __

The pythagoreon thereom is a^2+b^2 = c^2

First: replace/substitute the numbers with the corresponding variables.

6^2 + 8^2 = c^2
36 + 64 = c^2
100 = c^2

Sec: eliminate the exponent - find the square root of both sides.

V`(100) = V`(c^2)
10 = c or, c = 10

For a suited triangle, use the Pythagorean Theorem: a squared + b squared = c squared (the place a and b are legs and c is the hypotenuse). The hypotenuse of a triangle is the longest component and the legs are the two shorter facets. a squared + 7 squared = 12 squared a squared + 40 9 = a hundred and forty four a squared = a hundred and forty four - 40 9 a squared = ninety 5 a = the sq. root of ninety 5 a = 9.seventy 5 in this next concern, 17 is the hypotenuse and 14.6 is a leg. we are finding for the 2d leg. So: a squared + 14.6 squared = 17 squared a squared + 213.sixteen = 289 a squared = 289 - 213.sixteen a squared = seventy 5.eighty 4 a = the sq. root of seventy 5.eighty 4 a = 8.71 inches

I will give you a fact that will help you with other problems like this in geometry and standardized tests like the SAT. 3-4-5 is THE most common Pythagorean triple, and any multiple of those numbers is also a Pythagorean triple. Multiply 3-4-5 by 2 and you get 6-8-10. Just make sure the biggest number is the hypotenuse.

By the way, 5-12-13 is the second most common Pythagorean triple.

3, 4, 5 is a common right triangle.

6, 8, 10 would be another triangle based on the same proportions.

You could have used a^2 + b^2 = c^ and put a = 6, b = 8

36 + 64 = 100 = 10^2

So, 10.

You can always call on Uncle Pythagoras:
√(6^2 + 8^2) = √(36+64) = √100 = 10.

Also, if you remember some of your Pythagorean triplets, 3:4:5 is one of them. 6 and 8 are in a 3:4 ratio, so in this case the hypotenuse follows the same ratio. 3*2=6 and 4*2=8, so 5*2=10.
