Good question. I have seen people from both sides acting poorly but it does seem that most of the name calling comes from the left...even in the questions...I'm not saying the right doesn't call names but if you actually read the question and answer you can see it's from frustration at having their free speech trampled by the left while they scream free speech and peace are what they represent. The right tends to be unbending but they almost all agree on what they believe..the left is all over the place with their politics. In fact it changes all most daily...
The best thing you can do is give them the attention they deserve...none.

Libs are just unbelievable. One time, I was having a heated debate with someone about a Constitutional matter. When I became exasperated at the torrent of illogic and ignorance the Lib was spewing, I produced a copy of the U.S. Constitution, and proved he was wrong. Instead of contritely admitting his mistake, the Lib said, "Well, maybe it's not written in the Constitution...... but it SHOULD be!" Then, I was accused of being "close-minded" because I refused to live in his fantasy world where we could just wish that things were like his La La Land existence. Cold hard facts were unpalatable to him. Making him confront the truth brought out a hissy rant of insults.
Here's another example: one time a Liberal was trying to portray Conservatives as narrow-minded bigots, while portraying his group as magnamously egalitarian. In his eyes, Liberals nobly believed in true human potential, that everyone has the same capabilities and human rights. I saw my opportunity to make him eat his words, and I took it.
We started a heated argument about the Iraq war, and I got him so agitated he finally blurted out, "Oh come on. You don't really believe a bunch of volatile, irrational arabs can handle democracy do you?"
As they say, "Check and mate". :)

Don't paint the picture with such a broad brush
not all libs do that
Conservatives get just as much flack over the same issue
we ask "so is this compassionate conservatism?"
Not all liberals are for everything some are for, unlike all conservatives that must walk lock step with FOX and the GOP, we have a right to individuality.
example---paper said today that liberals weren't happy with the illegal alien proposal (they said that libs thought it was too strict)
I am a liberal all of my friends are also
WE ALL DETEST THIS BILL THAT BUSH and KENNEDY are proposing!!!

Personal attacks and childish antics aren't limited to the left of the political spectrum. Lots of far-rightists do the exact same thing when liberals use facts and point out inconsistancies, and those same "wingnuts" go apeshit.
And no one realy "loses" a debate, it's just a matter of who gets bored of the repetitive nonsense quicker.

my inbox is repeatedly attacked by people who object not only to my support of bush and the iraqi people but, also, with my contentment with my decision to do so. the more i show that i am proud and patriotic, the more vicious the attacks become.

As a life long conservative Republican, I think you have got it wrong. We conservatives are turning out to be more hypocritical than the liberals. Case-in-point, the war in Iraq and the continuous scandals that keep coming out under this administration.
Quit being juvenile.

Ideologues usually start resorting to name calling as soon as they have lost the debate. People lose their temper. They have not been persuaded by your arguments, they know they're right, so they progress to: you must be a big fat something...

Are you serious?
You're asking this question as if you are not aware that disparaging attacks are the way BOTH sides operate and play in the politcal arena.

I don't. I attack personally only when provoked by a personal attack. Period. I will discuss anything with anyone as rationally as they want - which is determined by the way they speak to me.
