I think reality. this competition isnt about the best technical singer. If it were the bottom 5 would have been Brandon Rogers, Stephanie Edwards, Lakisha Jones, Chris Sligh and Melinda. Its about who is the best artist in 2007 contemporary culture, therefore how can you not have Jordin and Blake being the final two?

Its just a huge popularity contest. Its supposed to be about singing but it comes down to who is the most popular and who has the most fans. Melinda should've won based on singing talent. Just like Chris Daughtry should've won last year.

I like to consider it an entertainment show. I mean, its not reality TV because it would show more "behind the scenes" stuff, and it damn sure isn't a singing competition. I think it was intended to be a singing contest but America votes for who they find most attractive, & whose best to look at rather then who can stay on pitch and sing the song properly. But who can blame america? Most of american's don't know the technical stuff that goes into singing, so in my opinion the judges should vote people off and it shouldnt be left in the hands of america to vote. and if america gets to continue to vote it should be limited vote, like dancing with the stars.

A agree. Like Simon always says, it's about the whole picture. Like, you can't just sing good. You have to have a nice personality, be pretty attractive (come on, the general American public is pretty shallow), you have to have good stage presense, and sing music people actually like. That's why Melinda was voted off-- her style of singing and the types of songs she sang appeal to such a small percentage of viewers.

It's not a singing competition...at least, not entirely. It's about who the public likes best, who is "idol" material. The people you listed definitely weren't, so that's why they're gone. America got it right for once.

a popularity contest.
lets face it, sure there is a huge range to who views American idol, but the ones doing most of the voting are 14 year olds with the minds of a herdless sheep.

I consider it a talent competition .... just like Star Search was ... just like Showtime at the Apollo... and I am sure the list goes on ... but that is all I can pull out of the cob-webs today.

Singing competition, because a competition (unless within a sitcom) IS real life stuff.
