Their traditional bases are frustrated with them, and most people see little if any similarities between their far-right idealism and everyday life. Will the Republicans move closer to the center in 2008 or drift further and further into right feild?

And what effect will Bush's track record of stubborness and defiance have on the next Republican presidential nominee?

I'd love to see Rudy Giuliani make a run, but I think he is too liberal for mid-America. So to answer your question, yes I think they will play to their base, and sadly that means no Rudy.

If they are smart, they will try and distance themselves from the far right as quickly as possible and move more toward the center. I believe, in most instances, this is the case with most of the contenders in the Republican party. Most Americans are centrists and disagree on just a few things vehemently. All politicians, regardless of party, should try to learn to compromise and worry about the welfare of the people and the nation first, and party politics second, if at all.

The answer to this is quite simple, in my opinion....and I`m sure this is not news to you... The right has to move left, and the left has to move towards the right to fool as many Americans as possible. Your other question....Bush`s track record, and the republican`s disgust with him made them act (or should I say, not act) in 2006. Many Americans are appalled by what they are seeing now in Washington. The republicans do not want to give the leftists any more power. The republicans screwed up the last time around, hoping to make a point....In 2008, it will be a vote of right against left....Like we saw in Germany not long ago and more recently in France...In our times, I feel the republicans have the upper hand in 2008...especially given the candidate pool from all sides.

With front runners like Guiliani and McCain who are MODERATE Republicans at the very most, I think you will see the Republicans starting to center themselves. Which ironically, is what Hillary Clinton is doing. She's becoming more conservative with some of her positions (despite her voting record). I think politicians are starting to see that although their base might be to the far left or the far right, that there are 100 million American voters who live in the middle. And to earn their votes, that's where they need to drift.

And Palosi does not cater to the far left...George Soros has invested Billions on Moveon.org..reperted daily conference with moveon.org...the recent hijacking of the left to the far left is now showing in polls...29% approve of the palosi congress so you will notice a major shift by the left to go back to the center and may be they will now remember how actually voted for them in 06.

The candidates will play to the base to get the nomination, then immediately shift to the center, if they want to have any chance of being elected.

Some people (morons) equate Bush's stubbornness with being steadfast in his ideals. Being steadfast is good, until you find out that it isn't working.

The first step to solving a problem, is admitting that there is a problem to begin with.

Ronald Reagan ran as a conservative. Instead of trying to appear to be a moderate, he spent a lot of time and effort explaining conservatism to the voters. The result:

LANDSLIDE!!!

If they run to the center they will loose. Pure and simple. What will they do? That depends on who the candidate is.

Republicans are going back to their base. The President was too left for them.
