The unpredictability of a fire is what makes it difficult to put out. You need to understand that many factors affect forest fires including; wind direction, wind speed, enviromental conditions, material that is burning, size of the fire, etc etc.
While curing diseases and landing on the moon are both very difficult tasks, they lack the certain unpredictability that the fire exhibits. (Well landing on the moon can be unpredictable) Curing diseases are all pretty much the same in that you administer drug x and you get a result.

We could, but the means by which we put a fire out has to be taken into consideration too.
Certain chemicals would take special care of being removed from the area after being used to extinguish the fire, as the biolgical damage done by the chemicals may be more harmful to the area than the fire itself. Obviously the most abundant chemical that requires no clean up is water. The problem with a forest fire is that by the time you get enough water there to put out the original fire, it's become so much larger that it requires even more water. Now, this can be taken into consideration, but would require larger amount of water that is conceivable. That water has to be taken from somewhere, in most cases it's the city's water supply, and if too much is taken then not enough is left for the populace. Some areas are easier to refill than others;90% of the lakes here in Texas are man-made, the only way they get refilled is through percipitation. For this reason, fire-fighters will do their best to use the water wisely. hitting key spots to prevent it from spreading and lessen the size to stop it from spreading as quickly. Generally speaking, forest fires aren't that bad either, they're part of the natural cycle. It makes teh soil in the burned area more fertile so plants may flurish; also, it releases carbon into the air which is vital. Unfortunatly, due to man there's an over abundance of carbon in the atmosphere, but prior to man, large fires were needed to keep the world flowing and happened naturally.

That is like locking the door after the horses are gone.
What we need is a schedule of cleaning up under the trees.
getting rid of dead trees and brush and making a park like apmosphere. IN the mid west it is brushy and sometimes the trees are so thick you can't walk through them.
So they go in and keep the best looking trees and cut any they can into firewood. Some goes into lumber and the branches goes into fiber board being ground up with a chipper shredded. Pile up the brush in piles which is very little you can't use and burn the piles. Some of the farmers are using every bit and have next to nothing to burn.
Brush hog the grass and turn that into cattle feed.
But to just let a forest go it is inevidable that one day it will burn and hurt a lot of people because then it gets out of hand and burns the trees you want to keep.
You would never do that in your yard? So why say this is a forest so we can do it here. what animal can't live in a park?
for those of you who say that rabbits and stuff hid in brush we have a solution. We have places where we put large plastic pipes. the animals love to hid in these and they don't burn or cause fires.

I could send this to a few firemen I know but fire acts as tho it is alive. If it is contained it is easy to put out, if it has an endless supply of flammable 'trees' in this case, what do you do, blow on it? Fire feeds on oxygen. An eventually forest fires are put out. Or the whole US would be burning.

We could, it's a matter of how much money and resources we choose to spend to do so. We could spend a billion dollars (or billions like space travel) and send 25,000 men to fight it. Do you really think that would fly each and every time?
And in case you forgot, forests have evolved to use fire and sometimes need it to survive (pine trees)

Fires are not as easy to control or predict I guess. Maybe it is really hard to get a lot of water to the fires.

Do you really believe we landed on the moon? If we landed then, when haven't they went back since then? I think there is something fishy to that story.
