And which messenger program may you be using, dear?
In general, it'd be an option in the messenger's options, audio or sound, turn off the sound for specific event such as message arrival.

if it is in an instant messenger service, go to options and sound options (or something like that) and turn the sounds off. If it is the Windows system showin' it's stupid messages all time, go to controlpanel and in audio options there's an option called "sounds", select "no sounds" and there ya go

If you mean from IM just go into the options and turn off sounds.
