The light is on the left-hand side of the "dummy light' section. It came on yesterday for the first time, and seems to drain gas. I noticed that the guages flutter a bit. Last night when I stopped the car it took a bit to turn off. I am hoping that it is a simple fix. I had not seen any information on a GEN light before, and can not find anything in the Haynes Manuel on what lights are in the instrument panel. PEASE HELP!

I just noticed two misspellings...first off it was last night, not ngiht! Second it should be a 1977...not 1997. Hope that helps!

Thanks for all the responses by the way. I will try to check the charge over the weekend and also see if I need to replace the alternator.

Simply put it means that a fault has been detected in the car's charging system. That usually means the alternator has quit working. You will have to determine if that is the case by checking the starting/charging system with a voltmeter or other similar means. Using a voltmeter and assuming the motor still starts and runs, just install a voltmeter across the battery. It should read around 14.4V or so unless the battery is really run down. If the meter says around 12V or less, the alternator is not producing anything. Now check the alternators inputs to be sure they are okay and if they are, you will have to replace the alternator assembly. Good luck.

Make sure that you hav'nt lost the fan belt! That light will come on in that event and the engine will run hot which may cause the engine to 'diesel' for a second or two when shut off. The other thing is if the electric cooling fan is hard wired to run all the time-it will eventually destroy the alternater(gen) and make the engine 'diesel' in simple terms.

If I'm correct that light has something to do with the alternator that normally wouldn't cause it to "diesel" though when it's shut down unless the voltage regulator in the alternator has gone bad and it's putting out to much voltage thus not letting it shut down right away. bottom line is you need to have your alternator checked out.

replace the alternator. This one has sticking brushes. (Or equivalent.) that is going to try this returned. the only different ingredient you may verify is the belt and tensioner. If and that i mean if, the tensioner is undesirable, that is allowing the belt to slide. After it gets heat, it gets sticky and starts off to artwork. yet i easily doubt that it is the case. verify to work out if the belt is loose. stable success.

It's a GENERATOR warning. Eventually your car is going to STOP. Get it to a mechanic.
