Cables are usually double-insulated thesedays. Tht is, the copper conductors are insulated with a coloured cover, and then the lot is encased in a plastic cover. If you can see any copper conductor, cut the cable, and fit either a plug on one end and a socket on the other - and make 2 shorter, safe cables, or fit an in-line connector - designed for connecting 2 cables in line. If only the outer insulation is damaged, you can use insulation tape to cover the area - up to 2" each side, A better solution is to use Rubber - self amalgamating tape. This stuff is waterproof, and self-joins, so will never unpeel. The absolute best method though, is to buy some adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing. Undo the cable from one end, and slide on the tubing. Use a piece about 4" long. position it over the bad area, then heat with a normal hair-dryer. This will cause the tube to shrink, and the adhesive to flow and seal the join. When cool, it will be equal or better than the oiginal. Re-attatch the plug again or the other end. It's wonderful stuff !

Sometimes I buy appliances or equipment at a pawn shop and use them to harvest needed parts. They're usually as cheap as replacing a single new part from a manufacturer.

For anything used you have to use the best
www.craigslist.com
You can find anything there. Just remember to select the area you are in before you search. I believe the default city is San Francisco, home to the developer of Craigslist.
Good luck.
