My husband and I cannot agree on anything. Running out of ideas, Help! We like names that are not commonly used and are more modern than traditional. We do not know the sex so we need boy and girl names. I want to know the names you have heard and thought, "Wow, I really like that!" Middle names suggestions are also welcome. Thanks for your help!

When you've got three syllables for the last name you can either go musical: three syllables for the first name also, or simple: one-syllable first name.

When I was struggling to come up with names for one of our children, I would make lists everyday and hand them to my husband at the end of the day, not telling him which were my favorites. We soon found common ground. The second-place choices became the girls' middle names. My son has my maiden name as his middle name, and I have never regretted that. Family connection is nice in choosing a middle name.

Some tips: How does the name work on the tongue going from the last sound of the first name to the "M" sound of the last name? For example: our last name began with an "St" so I eliminated all first names that ended with a "th" (like Meredith, even though I loved that name.) Too hard of a transition.)

Also, what are the nickname choices -- both charming and not-so-charming possibilities? And, how will that name look on a resume some day, with an interviewer looking to say, "Well, Meredith, tell me more about yourself?" That last tip is helpful to keep from naming your child a "baby" name.

And PLEASE, I beg of you, don't do a "creative" spelling. It just ends up looking like the parents don't know how to spell, and it is a fad that I am sure (I hope!) will pass.

for a girl, Antonia Rose, or Teresa with a middle name of 2 syllables.

for a boy, Tristan, or Joshua (both older but getting popular again).

Whatever you do though, keep in mind that kids are creative... and cruel. Say the name, out loud, fast, slow, with variations. If there is any way that the kid will end up picked on because of the name, start over. (I was named Michelle Lynn, say it fast, slur the words together a little, and keep in mind i had a pudgy adolesence)

Your going to have to agree on the name. I know it's hard, don't name the baby a name that brings up bad memory's of someone and don't tell anyone the name before the baby is born because someone will have something negative to say about it. For middle names I always went with my husband's or my first or middle name or grandparents, etc. Being a "biker chick" I like Harley...girl or boy. Aubry is another girl or boy name...Aubry - boy, Aubrey - girl. Hallie - girl.

My daughters are Nesiah Noel and Genesis Giselle. I knew since 5th grade that I would have a child named Noel....a kid was named that in my class and I loved it. A girl in high school was named Genesis and I adored it. The other name I had picked for Genesis was Samara Simone...you never know maybe one day I will have a Samara Simone.

If I would have had boys I would have named them Daniel Elias or Elijah. I love the name Xavier too. Good luck!
