Power?

Example: If I had a 2 ton Cadillac with a 4-cylinder engine in it, what would happen? The engine would work harder and wear out ALOT sooner, not to mention the lack of power. With a Northstar V8, the engine doesn't work as hard, last longer, and may even get better mileage than that of a 4-cylinder working it's pistons off. :)

I drive an SUV because I live in the mountains and have a family. If I had a small car I would not be able to make it anywhere on the roads up here, especially in the ice and snow. I also would not be able to get my groceries in my car. I shop once a month about an hour a way and it FILLS my SUV. Should I get a car and drive to the city every week so I could fit enough groceries for that week? Would that be better? I do recycle, compost and treat the earth as well as I can but sometime you just gotta do what you gotta do. If horses were cheap, I'd ride one to school. But then again, in 20 below zero, I don't think the horse would move and if he did, I'd be frozen by the time I arrived at work.

Don't be so free with the words "guzzles gasoline". I have several cadillacs with the 273 cubic inch V-8 engines, fuel injected, that give 30 mpg cruising down the highway. Have friends that drive little rice grinders with 4 bangers cover the same ground and get all of 25 mpg. It seems that smaller engines working very hard are not very efficient; whereas, a decent sized engine not being worked to its maximum everything gives top mileage. Think of the old cigarette commercial; I'd walk a mile for a camel (but they can't run a mile for a camel)?

Answer a question with a question, what is the purpose of having a Jaguar, Aston Martin or Dodge Viper with a V10 or V12?

More acceleration, more power, more fun, and just the sound of a V8+ makes your adrenaline pump. Gas guzzling is a thing of the past with modern technology. Chevrolet uses Active Fuel Management in most of their new V8's. Which when you're not in the need for V8 power or torque the system automatically converts to a V6 for better fuel efficiency.

we need the v-8 to run the wrecker when your little 4 cyl car,or glorified r/c toy runs out of battery juice. frankly, some jobs are just to hard for a small engine to do.granted some people dont need a v-8.but if they want to pay for the upkeep, thats on them.but in my experience v-8s have alot longer service lifes and less problems than the 4 cyl, and some v-6. also a v-8 can be made to be extremely fuel efficient if the time was taken to do so. my lifted dakota v-6 4x4,which weighs 2 tons, gets 21 to the gallon in the city w/o using cruise control. my friends stock 4 cyl s-10 2 wheel drive gets maybe 17.

What's the purpose of having a huge TV if you can see a small one? Or nice clothes if a few rags can cover what's necessary?

A V-8 can be a necessity depending on what the vehicle needs to do...

But, sometimes it's nice to enjoy some luxury and items that perform better than they need to. It's fun... I'm surprised at the people dissing what others do for fun. You don't buy anything that's nicer than necessary? Do you think everybody would place the same priority on those things? Some people like cars... cars with bigger motors... Some guys spend all their money on Kias, women's underwear and anal lube...People like different things. It's called freedom. What's wrong with that?

More often the power is needed for the ability to Tow or haul more than average loads. Some of the smaller 4 cyl engines barely have the ability to pull themselves when fully loaded and require the accelerator to be depressed into passing gear because of the lack of power which more than likely will use near as much gas as the 8 cyl and have more wear and tear on the small engine possibly overheating the 4 cylinder.

It's for making it go, stupid. My 67 mustang has a V8 and gets 25 MPG.... better than many modern V6s. Some modern V8s do better than many modern V6s. And try taking a four banger across country with 4 kids. What are city people good for other than guzzling $5 per shot espressos then bitching about cheap gas.

In addition to being more powerful, and better for towing or carrying cargo, V-8's typically last longer and have fewer problems, as they don't work as hard. If you drive a small car with an I-4 engine at the same speeds you drive a mid-sized car with a V-6 or V-8 engine, the I-4 will wear out faster because it has to turn more RPMs to get the same speed. The more RPMs the more wear on the engine. It also add more resale value to the car.

A V8 in a car is usually an option. So, it's purpose would be the same as power windows and door locks: because the buyer wanted it.

What's the purpose of a V6 when there's an I4? And with displacement on demand technology, new V8s are comparable to V6s in gas mileage.
