I agree with some of the other people about taking a bus from Thessaloniki to Halkidiki. The bus is easy and cheep. If you want to go to Santorini from Thesseolniki, there used to be a ferry that did that but i'm not sure if it is running anymore. Taking the train to Athens and then going to the sea port to travel by ferry isn't a bad option. If you want to get to Santorini quick, you will have to take a plane.

For me the most amazing thing about Santorrini was going to the anceint town of Akrotori. When the volcano that was the island of Thera (Satorini) erupted thousands of years ago it covered this anceint city in ash. However unlike Pompei the inhabitants were able to escape leaving behind only the buildings and some houshold items. But what treasures these were. THere is a therory that this Island and it's destuction are the seeds of the Atllantis story. I suggest that you read a few books about it before you go. THe museum is also incredible with reconstucted wall art compleatly different than other anceint art.
THe modern town is also friendly and inviting, Great hotels and resturants. You can walk a long distance along the inner shore with the ocean far below you and surrounded by the unique archetecure all around.

There used to be a ferry that ran from Thessaloniki to Skiathos, and then on to the Cycladic islands of Tinos, Mykonos and Paros....... But I heard that they stopped that route. Don't know if there is another ferry going to those islands from Thessaloniki. edit: I checked Airpole's 2nd link....i can only find ferries going to Lemnos, Mitilini, Kalymnos, Kos, Rhodes and a couple other places from Thess.

I know my hotel in Kassandra that I go to, has a bus that goes from Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki airport directly to the hotel. If you're staying at a hotel, check with them. If not, I'm sure there are other buses, or you can rent a car.

Hello dear!
You will enjoy great time in all: Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki and Thera.
Chalkidiki is adjacent to Thessaloniki. I used to go by taxi, but there are buses that will take you in an hour or less in most places of Chalkidiki.
Thera is a super island. Anything that interests you, you will enjoy!
