I would have to disagree with most of the people in this question thread. I think people like the VA-Tech shooter and Columbine shooters commit suicide as a final statement of being misunderstood. All of the questions that people have in regards to motive cannot be answered and therefore are not fully understood. I believe they also feel they are leaving the record of "not getting caught". They chose their own destiny. I should also mention that I have no feelings of sympathy towards these murderers, this is just my psychiatric evaluation. Keep in mind that sociopaths hate all life - not just other people's lives. They also hate their own.

being purely psychologically analytical (and i am def not a professional) i would say there are a few reasons.
1. they know they will be imprisoned probably for most of their life so they feel they may as well be dead
2. they are psychologically disturbed which is why they carry out the killing, as a sort of act of power or revenge. perhaps they were already contemplating suicide, but wanted to 'finish' their final business first.
3. maybe they are afraid that they are capable of remorse and don't want to have to process it as they feel their actions were justified.
4. they want everyone to pay in the same way they feel they are paying for their deal in life i.e. having their life ended like the killer who kills himself

I think for several reasons, one, their psychotic and two to avoid punishment by anyone else's hands, if they kill themselves they control everything and they obviously have a need for control. I'm 99.99% sure it has nothing to do with remorse, if it did they would have felt remorseful after killing the first person and it would have never been a mass murder at all.

I agree with the suicide angle; namely that he was someone who committed suicide and decided to kill other people while he was at it, rather than someone who killed a bunch of people and decided to kill himself while he was at it.
For a bit of a look into the mind of a mass murderer like this, read the link below about the first real mass murderer of this type.

What better way to thwart society than to refuse to participate in their system of justice?
I'm sure it would have made a lot of people feel better if they could have piled evidence in front of him, slung insults, and then locked him away or killed him themselves. Do you think he did not know this?
It is only a person who AGREES with society that allows themselves to submit to their justice. If you completely disagree with society and do not think them capable of justice, why would you ever allow yourself to fall into their hands?
Consider the flipside case: You live in Nazi Germany and completely disagree with everything they are doing. One day you decide you are not going to put up with it any more, so you strike out at everything the Nazis hold dear. Do you then stand around and let them execute you? Though we might consider someone who did this a hero today, make no mistake - it is sociopathic behaviour.
That is what you need to remember. Sociopaths are heroes in their own minds. They see us as the villains... ones that will happily torture them for years and commit endless atrocities on them. Who volunteers for torture?

Neither remorse nor stubbornness. I agree with Mike D and believe he did it to drive home his message of being victimized and misunderstood whilst at the same time disallowing authorities to decide his fate for him.

He was angry with everyone and himself. I really believe that after killing all these innocent people that he didn't get the satisifaction that he was looking for in doing that horrible act. In addition he knew that he was going to be further hated and put to prison and as a coward would not want to deal or face that in his future.

Yeah, what Pooky said. They make the decision first to kill themselves. Then that opens the door for them to plan attacks. Since they hate certain people (or all people) and they are going to die anyhow.
