The only performance tire (Fortera) close to my tire size was the one listed above.... wondering if they'd be able to install it. What does the first number refer to anyhow?

On what kind of vehicle???????

Why can't anyone include a year/make/model of vehicle on a question that clearly requires that information to provide a useful answer?

EDIT

OK, we have the info we need.

P205/75R15 97S is the standard tire on the 4x2. You say you want a performance tire? Why are you picking the Goodyear Fortera? That is not a performance tire. Its just an ordinary SUV tire. If you want a performance tire (handling, dry traction) then you need to look elsewhere and at different sizes than P235/75R15. That size alone will reduce the performance of your truck no matter what tire you put on it becuase it is so much taller it will hurt acceleration.

You could try the Yokoham AVID S/T which is a performanced tire designed for light trucks in a P215/70R15 97T. This will easily fit on your stock rims and work at the OE tire pressures and also should not effect the accuracy of your speedometer or odometer to any noticable degree. These are inexpensive too, $59 from the Tirerack. Another option is the Hankook RA07 at $79 from the same source.

Alternatively you could go with a P225/60R15 95H or 225/60R15 96H. Lots of genuine performance tires to choose from in this size (OE on BMW) and they will just fit on your 6.0-inch wide stock rims. The overall height is shorter which will effectively shorten the final drive ratio slightly, but will also make the odometer and speedometer read fast. You'll need to increase tire pressure by 3 psi with these tough.

Next up would be something like the Kuhmo Road Venture ST in P225/70R15 100T. This size will fill up the wheel wells a little better and the overall height is still very close to the stock tire. Also available in this size is the Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza.

Yes, they will fit. However, you should not have been driving on the 185/55 R 14 tyres, as these have a lower rolling diameter than the originals, and will have made your speedometer less accurate (the speedometer actually measures the rotational speed of the wheels, and is calibrated to turn that into a linear speed based on the factory-fitted tyre size). This may have changed your speedometer accuracy enough to make it illegal. You should also have checked the load and speed rating (the next two numbers and letter after the tyre size). I suspect that the 185/55 tyres were originally for a smaller car, so the load rating may not have been sufficient. This may be why they have worn more quickly than you expected.

205/75/15 is not the size of your rim.Your rim size is 15".So therefore,235/75/15 will fit your rim as you can mount a 15" tire on a 15" rim.Depending on what your putting them on i.e.t truck or small car be sure you have fender clearence when you turn. That will not be a problem on small & fullsize trucks and bigger cars.Could a problem on the small cars.

235 - mm wide at the tread
75 - 75% as tall at the sidewall as it is wide
15 - 15 inch wheel

they'll fit on your wheel but your speedo will be off by a small amount.
